John (JT) Miner

A proud member of the American Disc Jockey Association with 11 years of professional experience, his primary focus the past 7 years has been weddings. His background is very diverse; spanning from public speaking to being a front man in a band. Other ventures include clubs, corporate events, sorority/fraternal/school dances, and birthdays.

"I take pride in providing a quality presentation and a seamless array of music that is relevant to the couples' tastes & personality. I try not to be too flashy; after all, the bride & groom are the stars of the night!  A happy medium exist between facilitating the flow of an event and becoming the center of attention. Each reception should be unique to the newlyweds. This is their night and it shouldn't be like anyone else's.  Seeing peoples' faces light up with joy is the true reward of this industry." - JT Miner

How did you get into spinning tunes?

As with anything it is a process.  I started with a small show as a KJ (karaoke jockey).  More and more opportunities would soon come up and draw my interest.  A local band was scaling back so I bought their PA & would blast it in my apartment (I'm sure the neighbors loved this).  My first couple of weddings I assisted another DJ and I was instantly drawn into the scene.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Disc Jockey?

To be an integral part of a wedding is special, sacred, and I've been privileged to have served at many.  It is an amazing feeling to know that you are helping two people start a new and amazing journey together in a unique way.  At the end of the night you look around the room and so many people have this glowing persona and such huge smiles.  It's awesome.

Do you use a playlist?

Not really.  I have all the clients' specific request in a folder ready to go & everything else is done on the fly.  I always bring my entire music library with me because I don't like limitations.  There is an organic aspect to this line of work and you have to be adaptive and make decisions quickly.  The ability to take request increases guest involvement and facilitates better interaction.  I do my best to play as many request as possible but use my discretion in doing so.  No matter how many times a guest asks for a song I will not play it if I feel it is inappropriate.

What is the most unique thing you have had a bride & groom request?

This is really tough because I strive for every wedding to be unique & so many couples have done interesting things.  I've staged fire poi performances (I was not the performer) which the guest and groom were completely surprised by, had brides surf on top of guest backs to Hawaii Five-O, and introduced men as bridesmaids and they came out dressed sloppily in drag.  I could go on forever.

How do you introduce the bridal party?

This really could be blanketed under the previous question.  Introductions give the couple and their bridal party a creative outlet while others choose not to be announced at all.  The intro is completely dependent on the personalities of the bridal party and the wedding couple.  If a couple chooses to do an intro I recommend thinking outside of the traditional & formal box.  Last year an entire bridal party dressed as WWE wrestlers and mimicked their characters while entering to the wrestlers' theme songs.  The important thing is for them to do something that fits their personalities.  Being comfortable and starting the reception on a strong note are key elements.

Do you help the bride & groom select music?

Absolutely. Their are certain songs that I cannot offer specific suggestions for but may be able to point someone in the right direction.  For example, the song for the first dance should not be chosen by me.  If the couple is having difficulty with this I can ask them things to help them find their song.  Questions like, "what was the first song you danced to after you met?"  or "what's a song that you two hear and instantly think of one another?".  I won't know these personal details but, this may ignite a conversation and head them in the right direction regarding their song.

Do you give an option for a 'Do Not Play' list?

This is actually just as important if not more so than the music that is requested.  People have many reasons for not liking certain music. Clients have the freedom to select songs, artist, or genres that they do not wish to hear.  Music on this list will not be played for any reason unless instructed by the client to do so.

Is your club style different from your wedding style?

Yes.  Private events are inherently different from anything held publicly.  Private events (including weddings) are more streamlined in their scope, purpose, and audience.  At many clubs most anything goes and that is fine.  Private events are planned to achieve a specific purpose.  As such, everything I do there should fall under this umbrella.
